Past
A thousand years ago king Enric IV created The Nothings as a solution to a grave problem that he believed if left unchecked would bring Ithona---if not the entire world---to ruins. It is a problem that every society faces. Many might say it was just a natural aspect of civilization, and while Enric believed this might be true he didn't think it was at Ithona's level. Everywhere he looked he saw those of ill repute and those willing to pay these despicable criminal for their services. He wishing to cleanse his kingdom of corruption before it became like Olmor or even worse Celavis decided to retreat into The Great Cathedral of Myravos to seek advice from the Creator. He emerged about a week later with his solution. He decided that the only way to keep people from filling the pockets of these criminals was to provide them with the same services that those of poor reputation did. He created a government ran facility that he hoped would do that.
First, he had to find individuals to fill the positions within his new establishment. Unsurprising to many, he turned towards the very criminals he sought to remove. Some he recruited honesty. Others were tricked or forced to serve the establishment as punishment for their crimes. Regardless on how they came to work for this new government created facility they all shared the same fate. They were stripped of their every rights to such a degree that calling them a slave would be too much of an honor. Instead they are referred as nothings to show how much they are worth. Their body and soul belong to Ithona and her citizens and as such a subject of Ithona--no matter their status--can do whatever they want to a nothing or have a nothing commit an act without fear of punishment from the government because an act committed to or by nothing does not exist.

King Enric IV had those condemn as nothings branded with a mark upon their faces to let the people of Ithona and the entire world to know a nothing when they came upon one. These marks didn't only serve as identifying markers, but also as a way to ensure that a nothing didn't escape their fate. Magic had been woven into the mark that would eliminate the nothing if the mark is tampered with in any way or if the nothing wanders too far from Ithona. These explosions have been known to take out more than the nothing whose face it had been carved into, but these 'victims' have all been proven to have attempted to help rid a nothing of their mark. People at first were leery of the king's new creation. They thought there were some kind of catch.
Enric was known to be an extremely pious man, and they thought this was the last thing that someone like him would come up with. A number of people discouraged others from using the nothings. They claimed it was just a matter of time before the ball drops and the king's true intentions revealed, but in the end their warnings went upon deaf ears. It is unclear the reason for this. Perhaps, what was being offered to them was too good to ignore, but it became clear the devious ploy those whom had protested against Enric newly created organization was nothing more than unfounded concern. It didn't take long for any further protests to be silenced, and not long after that for any private establishments offering the same services as the nothing to be put out of business, at least within Ithona.
It was merely impossible for them to complete with the nothings prices, whose short-term services were free and whose long-terms ones cost a fraction of these private business' prices. Some tried to argue that the use of a nothing should always be free, but Enric was quick to state that a nothing belongs to Ithona and her people and when you make use of a nothing for an extended period of time you are taking that resource from everyone else. This was simply unfair. No individual should have more access to a nothing than the next. The fee was merely an apology to the rest of Ithona rather than payment for a nothing's services. This explanation seemed to satisfy people and the ages passed until Makariy came into the world.
He was the bastard that King Leolin XII squirted into a scullery maid. The maid to prove that she had no interested within the throne of Ithona sold Makariy to the nothings before he was even born, or so he has been told. He has doubts, but they are nothing more than a gut feeling. What he had been lead to believe isn't far-fetched. In fact, it is more common than not. Many of the nothing ranks are filled with bastards such as him. Having sexual relationships outside of the sanctity of marriage--especially if this indulgence results in a bastards--is one of biggest sins within the eyes of The Creator. However, one can easily make atonement for any affront to the laws The Creator by selling themselves--or in the case of infidelity--any child born from such an illicit relationship to the nothings.
Through, some might argue = the clink of coin that is the biggest motivator for someone to sell their child born out of wedlock to the order. A large percent of the women whom end up selling their bastard child to the order come from an extremely poor background where either they or their children--regardless of their legitimacy--end up belonging to the order. For many of these women, the money they can earn from selling a child born of sin is the difference between life and death. There are those whom suspects that the destitute purposely have children outside of wedlock in order to sell them to the nothing, but their concerns are not met in the manner they might hope. Either their misgivings are ignored or those whom they wished to be reprimanded are commended instead.
Regardless, it would have not changed Makariy's status as a nothing. His training started as soon as he was brought into the compound. His childhood was far from a happy one. It was filled with torment and horrors as the idea that he was nothing was quite literally beaten into him. Yet, try as his trainers might they could not completely extinguish the fire of defiance that burned within him. Other than that he excelled at his training, and in the end his slight rebellious nature was overlooked because he appeared to be the most promising nothing they had received in a long time. He was released to the public for use, and it became clear that he was as talented as suspected. He quickly became the one people turned towards when they wished for a long-term contract successfully completed on the first try.
More than that he seemed to relish within his role. That is until his sister was brought into the compound. She was just another one of King Leolin XII bastards. The king was known from spreading his seed around, and people joked that within a few years the nothing ranks will be filled with nothing but his seeds whom were too stupid to realize where they shouldn't take root. He felt nothing towards the king's other bastards. No sense of kinship. No sense of loyalty or overwhelming desire to protect and defend. This was not so when he laid eyes upon his sister. He tried to deny his feelings, but he couldn't. He tried to ignore or even avoid his sister, but he often found himself within the same room as her.
Not only that, he found himself questioning the nothing. He begun to wonder if what had been done to them was right or even just. He begun to question whether or not the magic that served as their shackles could be successfully removed. He knew the answers would not reveal themselves over night, but that did not mean he would not seek them out. It was not for himself he wished to find them, but for the little sister whom he had develop an incredible fondness for. He did not wish for her to suffer the fate of a nothing. He decided to take a direct role in her training. Hoping that perhaps he could delay he release into public for as long as possible, and that if luck was on his side that he would be able to find a way to free her.
His ploy worked, at least where delaying his sister being released for public use is concerned. There were those whom suspected his ruse, but since they had no way to prove his guilt without a shadow of a doubt corrective action was not taken. However, he knew unless he find a way to remove the mark from her face that the day he dreaded would arrive. Those whom ran the facility will not wait forever for her to become completely trained. They will just decide that her training was good enough and release her to the public. The whispers around the compound told him that he was running out of time, but he was no closer to finding the answers than he had been.
However, before the dreaded day arrived his prayer was answered, but not in the manner he had expected. It came in the form of the Baroness of Estis. She was an extremely influential and power woman within Ithona. Some said she wielded more power and influence than even the king himself, and those whom didn't agree with this claimed that she was only second to the king when it came to these things. However, for Makariy she was merely one of his regulars. She had been taking him into her bed since the day she brought his sister into the compound. She would even arrange long-term contracts to ensure that no one else had him, at least not without her permission.
When he answered her request to received the best. He did not expect things to play out the way it would. He thought it was just another one of her desire to keep him long-term. This was not the first time she made such a request, but when she finally revealed the reason for summoning him to her estate it was not what he had imagined. She wanted him to escort her granddaughter to the lands across Dartterre Ocean. At first, he refused. One: no one---aside from the Lehamani tribes---had been to those lands since man had fled a great evil ages eons ago. The second: It was one of the few acts that even a nothing was forbidden to commit. It would get everyone involved killed.
The Baroness refused to accept his rejection. She told him that the girl was his daughter, and that she knew he did not always follow the rules when it came to his family. He had broken them many times over for his sister. He should do the same for his daughter than it hit him---if the baroness had a way to ensure her granddaughter crossed the Dartterre intact than she could do the same for someone else. He thought about his sister, and saw this as the only way of freeing her. He knew if he succeeded he would never see her again, but he figured whatever laid on the other side of the ocean couldn't be worse than being condemned as a nothing.
He couldn't allow this opportunity pass him by. So, he agreed to help the baroness on the condition that she helped his sister get out too. He expected her to refuse or even consider it for a few moments, but she did not. She agreed. He couldn't help thinking that it was a little too easy, but he didn't ponder it too long because he needed to gather his sister for the journey to the Lehamani tribes because it would be one of them whom would escort them across the Dartterre. In fact, they were searching for a man named Daryos. This man is said to be one of the few to cross the vast ocean on a regular bases. It is said he is the best sailor. Some claimed he is a pirate. Others worse. Whatever the truth. It was decided that he was the only one whom can successfully get them to where they wished to go.
The journey to the Lehamani was tiring, but not for the reason one might have thought. It was Makariy's daughter whom made the journey such. She grated on his nerves. He never met anyone as annoying as her, and more than a few times he lost his temper with her. He tried to tell herself that she was just a scared child, but the feeling she was evil incarnate kept rising up within his mind. He pushed it down, but he couldn't completely make it vanish. However, his suspicions were proven correct when he spoke to Daryos. His daughter revealed she had not actually been marked as a nothing. In fact, she wasn't really his daughter. Her grandmother had just told him that because she believed it was the only way to get him to do what she wished.
She revealed that the baroness was that great evil that man had fled across the Darterre to escape from in the first place, but the ancient magic that had bonded the nothings to her as her playthings were fading and she was sending her granddaughter across the ocean to fix it. However, her granddaughter would not succeed in her mission because she was shot dead by Daryos' wife---a woman clearly not of the Lehamani tribes. It was, also her, that gave him more than a gut feeling that what he had been told about his heritage might be a lie by claiming he was the last dragon.
He has no clue what she meant by him being the last dragon. Was it a title of some kind or was he literally a dragon? Any attempt to gain answer from either her or her husband fell flat. They merely smiled and told him that the answer will come clear when they reached the other side. It was not just these words that made it clear he had to cross the Darterre, but something else--an overwhelming sense of duty perhaps. He knows he can't go back. The baroness will be displeased that they put a wrench into her plans. Through, she might not be as upset about it as he might think. She might even have wanted her granddaughter killed here. If that was the case the question is why? Whatever the answer, he had a feeling it would reveal itself on the other side. Besides, the last thing he wanted to do was return to where the baroness could easily reach him.
There is no way of knowing what awaited on the other side. Sure, he heard the stories, but so much time had passed that what those whom had fled left behind might be very different than what was there now and the Lehamani being the secretive people they are gave no hint to what was there. He finds himself both apprehensive and excited for what might be on the other side, and it just a matter of days before they reach their destination and their adventure truly begins.
